Unlocking The Medinan Qur’an, Nicolai Sinai editörlüğünde hazırlanmış, akademik bir eserdir. Adından da anlaşıldığı üzere Medine döneminde inen ayetler kitabın inceleme konusunu teşkil etmektedir. Ancak kitabın başlığına konu olan ifadeyle İslami literatürde karşılaşmak mümkün değildir. Buna mukabil yaygın olan, Kuran’daki ayetlerin ve surelerin mekkî ve medenî şeklinde sınıflandırılmasıdır. Bu sınıflandırmada ölçünün ne olduğu tartışmalıdır. Bu konuda birbiriyle ihtilaflı görüşler içerisinde baskın olan, hicreti esas alan görüştür. Buna göre hicretten önce nazil olan ayet ve sureler, mekkî; hicretten sonra nazil olan ayet ve sureler, medenî kabul edilmelidir. İslami literatürde yaygın olan bu sınıflandırma kitabın başlığında hatalı olarak ifade edilmiştir. Kuran’da mekkî ve medenî ayetler olmakla birlikte Mekke Kuran’ı ve Medine Kuran’ı şeklinde bir niteleme ve sınıflandırma mevcut değildir. Eser, hatalı bir sınıflandırmaya dayalı bir başlığa sahiptir. Ancak Kuran’ın muhteviyatına ve tarihine ilişkin önemli konular içermektedir. Bunların her birisi müstakil bir incelemeye konu olabilecek düzeydedir. Bu değerlendirme yazısı, eserin içeriğindeki konulara dikkat çekme amacı taşımaktadır.

Unlocking The Medinan Qur’an is an academic work prepared under the editorship of Nicolai Sinai. As its name suggests, the verses revealed during the Medinan period constitute the subject of the book’s examination. However, it is impossible to recognize the expression in the book’s title in Islamic literature. In contrast, the widespread classification of the verses and chapters in the Qur’an as Meccan and Medinan is debatable. The criterion used in this classification is debatable. Among the conflicting views on this subject, the dominant view is based on migration. Accordingly, the verses and chapters revealed before the migration should be considered Meccan; the verses and chapters revealed after the migration should be considered Medinan. The book’s title incorrectly expresses this classification, which is widespread in Islamic literature. Although there are Meccan and Medinan verses in the Qur’an, there is no qualification or classification as the Meccan Qur’an or the Medinan Qur’an. The work has a title based on an incorrect classification. However, it contains essential issues regarding the content and history of the Qur’an. Each of these can be the subject of an independent study. This evaluation article aims to draw attention to the issues in the content of the work.
