The Ontological Foundations of Education in Classical Thought: Being, Truth, and the Crisis of Meaning in Modern Education
Öz
This study examines the understanding of existence and truth upon which education is based in classical thought from an ontological perspective; it also discusses the effects of epistemological and ontological transformations that emerged in the modern era on the conception of education. Starting from the assumption that every understanding of education is based on a specific ontological and epistemological foundation, the study addresses the decisive influence of the dominant conception of being and truth in classical thought on the purpose, content, and method of education. In the classical period, education was shaped by the answers given to the questions of what the nature of man is and how truth can be grasped. In this context, education in classical thought is understood not only as a pedagogical activity but also as a process of ontological competence for man, as an expression of the relationship man establishes with being. The study specifically reveals how the acceptance in classical thought that being is bound to an orderly, meaningful, and transcendent principle shaped education as a process of man's turning towards truth and achieving competence. However, the moral, intellectual, and existential dimensions of education have been analyzed within the framework of the ontological and epistemological approaches of Plato, Aristotle, Farabi, and Ibn Sina. The study also discusses the instrumentalization and meaning crisis that has emerged in the modern understanding of education, in the context of the ontological transformation occurring in the understanding of truth and existence. Therefore, education is considered not only as the transfer of knowledge, but also as a holistic process aimed at enabling the individual to understand their place within the order of existence. In conclusion, the study emphasizes that education is not merely a technical process, but an ontological and philosophical issue; it argues that the holistic perspective offered by classical thought holds possibilities for contributing to a rethinking of the relationship between human, truth, and the purpose of education in modern educational discussions.
