Development of Terror Management Scale and testing of the psychometric properties

Öz

This study was conducted to develop a measurement tool that can be used to determine the level of terror management of individuals aged 18 and over and to test its psychometric properties. In the study group of the research, there were 423 female and 237 male participants totalling 660. In the Exploratory Factor Analysis conducted to examine the construct validity of the Terror Management Scale, it was determined that the scale had a structure with three factors and 15 items and that this structure explained 61.84 percent of the total variance. As a result of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the scale, the goodness of fit values obtained were χ2/df=1.76; RMSEA=.062; SRMR=.063; GFI=.91; CFI=.95; IFI=.95 and TLI=.94. Within the scope of reliability studies, McDonald's Omega (ω) coefficient calculated to determine the internal consistency of the overall scale is .82. The correlation coefficients calculated to determine the stability of the scale by test-retest method ranged between .76 and .84 on the basis of subscales. In line with these results, it can be stated that the Terror Management Scale can be used as a valid and reliable measurement tool to determine the level of terror management of adult individuals.

Dehşet Yönetimi Ölçeği’nin geliştirilmesi ve psikometrik özelliklerinin sınanması

Öz

Bu çalışma, 18 yaş ve daha üstü bireylerin dehşet yönetimi düzeylerini belirlemek için kullanılabilecek bir ölçme aracı geliştirmek ve psikometrik niteliklerini sınamak amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunda 423 kadın ve 237 erkek toplam 660 katılımcı bulunmaktadır. Dehşet Yönetimi Ölçeği’nin yapı geçerliliğini incelemek için gerçekleştirilen Açımlayıcı Faktör Analizi’nde ölçeğin 15 madde ve 3 alt boyutlu bir yapıda olduğu ve bu yapının toplam varyansın yüzde 61,84’ünü açıkladığı saptanmıştır. Ölçeğin Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi’nde ulaşılan uyum iyiliği değerlerinin χ2/df=1.76; RMSEA=.062; SRMR=.063; GFI=.91; CFI=,95; IFI=,95 ve TLI=,94 olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Güvenilirlik çalışmaları kapsamında ölçeğin genelinin iç tutarlılığını belirlemek için hesaplanan McDonald's Omega (ω) katsayısı 0,82’dir. Test tekrar test yöntemi ile ölçeğin kararlığını belirlemek için hesaplanan ilişki katsayılarının alt ölçekler bazında 0,76 ile 0,84 arasında değiştiği saptanmıştır. Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda yetişkin bireylerin dehşet yönetimi düzeyini belirlemek amacıyla geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olarak Dehşet Yönetimi Ölçeği’nin kullanılabileceği ifade edilebilir.
