Bioinformatics Awareness of Prospective and In-service Science Teachers
Abstract
Bioinformatics aims to collect quantitative data on genomes, protein sequences and three-dimensional structures of proteins, metabolic path databases, hybridoma information and biodiversity information of all biological species including human. Based on the fact that there are not enough studies on bioinformatics, the opinions of current science teachers and prospective science teachers about bioinformatics are important in terms of depicting the status of bioinformatics education in our country. Therefore, this study aims to determine the bioinformatics awareness of middle school science teacher and prospective science teachers. Case study is determined as the design of the research. Twenty-five science teachers and 30 prospective science teachers have participated in this study. The data of the study were collected through the responses of the participants to a questionnaire consisting of four open-ended questions. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyses the data collected after receiving written opinions. When the findings of the study are analyzed in general, it was revealed that bioinformatics and genetics and biology sciences were associated with the participants. Furthermore, in the context of bioinformatics, genetics and information technologies were closely related.
