Investigating the Effects of Several Variables on University Students’ Facebook Addiction: Kastamonu University Example

Öz

This study examines university students’ Facebook addiction in terms of several variables. The sample consists of 217 students from the departments of Computer Engineering, Computer Education and Instructional Technologies, Pre-School Education, Primary School Education and Turkish Education at Kastamonu University. The Facebook Addiction Scale (FAS) was employed for data collection. As the data was normally distributed, independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA parametric statistics for analysis. Results show that university students do not show a tendency to be Facebook addicts in general. However, examining scores received from the FAS for individual students reveal that while 79.72% of the students are not addicted to Facebook, 4.15% of them are Facebook addicts. 16.13% of the students are also in the risk group. F2, F3, F5 and F6 factors and overall scores show that there is a statistically significant difference between genders’ Facebook addiction. Average scores show that the levels of male students’ Facebook addiction are higher than the levels of female students’ Facebook addiction. While 8.22% of the males are Facebook addicts, the number decreases to 2.08% for females. While 71.23% of the males are not addicted to Facebook, 84.03% of the females are not Facebook addicts. Males and females are 20.55% and 13.89% at risk of Facebook addiction, respectively. The higher frequency of Facebook usage also predicts higher possibility of Facebook addiction. A significant difference was not found between the students’ departments and Facebook addiction.
