The Dedeoğlu Flour Factory as Industrial Heritage: From the National Defense Era to the Present
Öz
The developments that followed the Industrial Revolution led to a significant increase in industrial buildings during the Tanzimat period of the Ottoman Empire, with such structures primarily concentrated in and around Istanbul. Today, many of these buildings either remain idle or have been reactivated through adaptive reuse, thereby constituting important components of urban identity. Within this context, the flour factory complex located in the Suçıkan neighbourhood of the Dinar district in Afyon Province represents one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in the region, particularly in terms of flour supply during the period of national struggle. Established in 1926 and remaining in operation until 1985, the factory functioned as a major production facility for nearly six decades, playing a significant role in the regional economy and food supply. This study examines the conservation and adaptive reuse potential of the Dedeoğlu Flour Factory complex, aiming to contribute to regional socio-economic development while safeguarding cultural heritage values. The research is based on a qualitative case study methodology, incorporating archival research, on-site field surveys, and documentation studies, as well as a comparative evaluation of selected national and international industrial heritage examples. Within this framework, the study proposes the re-functionalisation of the complex as an Industrial Heritage Culture and Experience Center, emphasising the interpretation of original machinery, production processes, and historical narratives related to flour production. Furthermore, the integration of the factory into a broader industrial heritage and cultural tourism route associated with Suçıkan is proposed in order to enhance regional visibility and accessibility. The study highlights the importance of flexible and multifunctional spatial arrangements in line with sustainable design principles, including energy efficiency, natural lighting, and ventilation strategies. The findings suggest that the adaptive reuse of the Dedeoğlu Flour Factory in accordance with its architectural and historical character can contribute not only to the preservation of industrial heritage but also to sustainable local and regional development.
