Analyzing Design Work: Two-Phased Design Process Model with the Case Study on Turkish Packaging Product Designers

Öz

There are two dominant models of design processes in academic studies which are the rational and action-centric models, and those two have completely opposite working mechanisms. The purpose of this study is to examine design processes of professional product designers in order to understand inner mechanics of their practice and illustrate a more generalized design process model accordingly. Using semi-structured, in-depth interviews, this study examined the ideal and actual design process examples of Turkish packaging designers who has designed rakı bottles between 2002 and 2019. Results indicated that design processes have two characteristically distinct phases due to the organizational structure and different thinking methods required. This two-phased design process model provides an explanation about how rational and action-centric models co-exist. Although the results have yielded a promising model, further studies needed to test it under different variables and circumstances.
