Purpose: The purpose of this research is to present a comprehensive current situation and future trends by using bibliometric analysis techniques in terms of author, citation, country, journal, institution and keyword dimensions of scientific studies published on the Arctic Sea Route.
Design/Methodology: The keywords “Arctic Route,” “North Sea Route,” and “Northern Sea Route” were searched in the Web of Science (WoS) database within author keywords and publication titles, yielding a total of 482 publications from the period 1978 to 2025. These studies were analysed by using VOSviewer and Bibliometrix (RStudio-Biblioshiny) software tools.
Findings: The findings indicate that the Arctic Sea Route literature is predominantly focused on the field of logistics. Russia emerges as the most publishing country, while China has received the highest number of citations. The most productive author was identified as Sandven, S., and the most cited author is Khan, Faisal. Furthermore, “Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice” was the most highly cited journal, and “Dalian Maritime University” is the most cited institution. Moreover, keyword analysis revealed frequent use of terms such as “northern sea route,” “transportation,” “logistics,” “Arctic shipping,” “maritime transport,” and “container shipping.”
Limitations: The main limitations of the study include the fact that the Scopus database is very similar to the WoS data and that the records in databases such as Google Scholar, YÖK Thesis Center and TR Index cannot be analyzed by combining them due to the different data format.
Originality/Value: There has been a considerable increase in the number of studies on the Arctic Sea Route since 2012. However, a review of the existing literature reveals the absence of a study that systematically analyzes and evaluates research topics and trends within this field. This study aims to contribute to policymakers, the private sector, public institutions, and academic by providing insights into the Arctic Sea Route, which offers substantial advantages for trade between Europe and Asia in terms of logistics, engineering, and commerce.
