FESHANE-İ ÂMİRE: OSMANLI DÖNEMİNDEN GÜNÜMÜZE ENDÜSTRİYEL MİRASIN DÖNÜŞÜMÜ

Öz

Bu makale, Feshane-i Âmire’nin 19. yüzyıldaki Osmanlı Devlet Fabrikası kimliğinden 21. yüzyılda Artİstanbul Feshane adıyla işleyen bir kültür mekânına dönüşümünü uzun erimli bir perspektifle analiz etmektedir. Nitel, tarihsel-yorumsamacı bir vaka çalışması yaklaşımını benimseyen araştırma; arşiv ve belgesel incelemeyi, tarihî fotoğraflar ve planları, yerinde mekânsal gözlemleri ve güncel sergi/iletişim materyallerinin eleştirel okumasını bir araya getirmektedir. Çalışma ilk olarak Feshane’nin Osmanlı sanayileşmesi içindeki rolünü yeniden kurmakta; bu bağlamda buhar teknolojisinin devreye girişi, endüstriyel beceriler için bir eğitim/öğrenme alanı işlevi ve daha sonra Cumhuriyet dönemi sanayi politikalarına eklemlenmesini vurgulamaktadır. Ardından, I. Dünya Savaşı sırasında kadın işçilerin üretim süreçlerine dahil olmasını, emek ilişkilerini ve kentsel kamusal alandaki toplumsal cinsiyet görünürlüğünü yeniden yapılandıran bir kırılma noktası olarak öne çıkarmaktadır. Son olarak makale, yerleşkenin günümüzde çağdaş sanat merkezi olarak yeniden işlevlendirilmesini inceleyerek, endüstriyel modernite ve kadın emeğine ilişkin anlatıların nasıl dolaşıma sokulduğunu, estetikleştirildiğini ya da sessizleştirildiğini sorgulamaktadır. Bu çerçevede çalışma, Feshane’nin İstanbul’da koruma, toplumsal cinsiyet ve kültürel kimliğin kesişiminde endüstri mirasını yeniden düşünmek için kritik bir mercek sunduğunu ileri sürmektedir.

FESHANE-İ ÂMİRE: THE TRANSFORMATİON OF INDUSTRİAL HERİTAGE FROM THE OTTOMAN ERA TO THE PRESENT

Öz

This article analyses the long-term transformation of Feshane-i Âmire from a nineteenth-century Ottoman state factory into the twenty-first-century cultural venue Artİstanbul Feshane. Adopting a qualitative, historical-interpretive case study approach, it combines archival and documentary research, historical photographs and plans, and onsite spatial observations with a critical reading of contemporary exhibition and communication materials. The study first reconstructs Feshane’s role within Ottoman industrialisation, highlighting the introduction of steam technology, its function as a training ground for industrial skills and its later integration into Republican industrial policy. It then foregrounds the entry of women workers during the First World War as a turning point that reconfigured labour relations and gendered visibility in the urban public sphere. Finally, the article examines the recent adaptive reuse of the complex as a contemporary art centre, questioning how narratives of industrial modernity and women’s labour are mobilised, aestheticised or silenced. In doing so, it argues that Feshane constitutes a critical lens for rethinking industrial heritage at the intersection of conservation, gender and cultural identity in Istanbul.
