The Role of Digital Scent in Multisensory XR Systems within The Internet of Senses

This study explores the integration of digital scent technologies within multisensory extended reality (XR) systems, focusing on their role in shaping immersive experiences through the emerging paradigm of the Internet of Senses (IoS). While current XR applications predominantly stimulate visual and auditory channels, achieving a truly immersive digital environment requires the inclusion of additional senses such as touch, taste, and smell. The Internet of Senses seeks to bridge this gap by incorporating sensory technologies including haptics, olfactory systems, and gustatory feedback into wearable, intelligent XR platforms. Furthermore, the use of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) extends digital immersion beyond external stimuli by enabling cognitive-level interaction. This paper discusses how IoS technologies replicate real-world experiences by leveraging modular sensory devices and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven systems. It examines how these innovations eliminate the perceptual divide between virtual and physical environments across domains such as healthcare, education, retail, and entertainment. The study also addresses the potential of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to enhance multisensory synchronization and semantic interaction within XR systems. Overall, the integration of digital scent and related technologies not only increases user immersion but also lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive and perceptually rich digital experience.
