The Role of Participation in Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings in Sustainable Recovery: A Qualitative Study

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 5 Sayı: 2, 86 - 104, 31.12.2025

Öz

The aim of this study is to explore the meeting attendance experiences of members of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) in depth and to identify the psychosocial mechanisms that contribute to sustainable recovery processes. Conducted using a qualitative research design, the study involved semi-structured interviews with eight NA members, and the collected data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that participants’ recovery processes were shaped around three main categories: (1) A new environment, (2) New forms of effort, and (3) A new identity (a servant-identity). Participants reported that through attending NA meetings, they encountered a non-judgmental, inclusive, anonymous, and safe community; adopted new behavioral patterns such as honesty, altruism, and responsibility; and reconstructed themselves as helpful and trustworthy individuals. The results indicate that NA participation not only supports the cessation of substance use but also fosters psychosocial and identity-based recovery. The findings contain important implications that should be considered by Clinical Psychologists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, and Addiction Counselors working in the field. The results are interpreted and discussed within the framework of the relevant literature.
