The Effect of Natural Colorants on Wood Surface Aesthetics: An Investigation on American Walnut and Oriental Plane in the Context of Interior Design

Colour is a direct determining factor on the functionality of interior design and the perceptual quality of the space. In this study, in order to contribute to aesthetic and sustainable surface applications in the field of interior design, changes in color parameters (L*, a*, b*, C* and ho) obtained by applying pomegranate extract, gum Arabic and a solution of a mixture of these two substances to the surfaces of American walnut (Juglans nigra L.) and oriental plane tree (Platanus orientalis L.) wood were determined. According to the results, after the application of the solution prepared using pomegranate flower extract + gum Arabic, the ΔE* value was determined as 13.71 in Oriental plane wood and 10.31 in American walnut wood. Decreases in ho and L* values were observed with three different solutions prepared for both wood types, while increases in a* values were observed. Increases in the C* parameter were observed in oriental plane wood with all three solutions. Pomegranate flower extract decreased the b* parameter in both wood types, while gum Arabic application increased this parameter. The different solutions used in the study were found to result in different color parameter results for both wood types. These results show that a balanced design approach between aesthetic diversity and environmental sustainability can be developed on interior surfaces through the use of natural colorants.

Öz
Renk, iç mekân tasarımının işlevselliği ve mekânın algısal niteliği üzerinde doğrudan belirleyici bir unsurdur. Bu çalışma, iç mekân tasarımı alanında estetik ve sürdürülebilir yüzey uygulamaları için katkı sağlamak açısından, Amerikan cevizi (Juglans nigra L.) ve Doğu çınarı (Platanus orientalis L.) odunları yüzeylerinde Narçiçeği ekstraktı, Arap zamkı ve bu iki maddenin karışımına ait çözeltinin uygulanması ile elde edilen renk parametrelerindeki (L*, a*, b*, C* ve ho) değişimler belirlenmiştir. Sonuçlara göre, narçiçeği ekstraktı + Arap zamkı kullanılarak hazırlanan çözeltini nuygulanması soransında Doğu çınarı odununda ΔE* değeri 13.71 ile Amerikan cevizi odununda ise ΔE* değeri 10.31 şeklinde belirlenmiştir. Her iki odun türünde hazırlanmış olan 3 farklı çözelti ile ho ve L* değerlerinde azalışlar bulunurken a* değerlerinde ise artışlar tespit edilmiştir. C* parametresinde her üç çözelti ile doğu çınarı odununda artışlar belirlenmiştir. Her iki ağaç türünde narçiçeği ekstraktı b* parametresinde azalışa neden olurken, Arap zamkı uygulaması ile bu parametrede artışlar tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmada kullanılan farklı çözeltiler her iki ağaç türü üzerinde renk parametrelerinde farklı sonuçların elde edilmesine enden olduğu görülmüştür. Bu sonuçlar, doğal renklendirici kullanımıyla iç mekân yüzeylerinde estetik çeşitlilik ve çevresel sürdürülebilirlik arasında dengeli bir tasarım yaklaşımı geliştirilebileceğini göstermektedir.
