The neuroprotective effect of Coconut Oil in mice with Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the possible neuroprotective effect of coconut oil in mice with traumatic brain injury. Materials and Methods: Mice were randomly divided into two groups (n=5 per group); namely, the control and coconut oil groups, which were administered 250 µl saline and 10 mg/kg body weight per os coconut oil along a week, respectively, before cold brain injury. Infarction and edema volume in the brain was measured with cresyl violet in two groups on the eighth day, 24 hours after injury. Results: Our data indicated a statistically significant decrease in the infarct and oedema volumes after coconut oil application. Conclusion: Our findings have supported that coconut oil has a potential neuroprotective effect on damaged neurons after traumatic brain injury in mice.
