Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of orthodontic treatment needs on psychosocial status and self-esteem in dentistry students.
Material and Methods: A total of 279 dentistry students with a mean age of 21.31±1.86 years were enrolled. The need of orthodontic treatment was examined by Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need. Self-esteem was evaluated by Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Psychosocial Impact of Dental Esthetics Questionnaire was used to examine the psychosocial status. The comparisons between groups and subgroups were done by One-way analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparison test. Independent samples t test and Pearson correlation test used to evaluate the difference between genders and questionnares.
Results: The difference in need for orthodontic treatment (Aesthetic Component objective and subjective) between the genders was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05), The difference between the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Esthetics Questionnaire total value and subgroups significant (p>0.05). Self-esteem value of female was found to be higher than male. As the total Psychosocial Impact of Dental Esthetics Questionnaire values increased, the need of treatment and self-esteem values increased (p<0.05). Total Psychosocial Impact of Dental Esthetics Questionnaire score for both subjective and objective treatment need were found to be significant in self-esteem and psychosocial impact (p <0.05). There was no significant relationship between Psychosocial Impact of Dental Esthetics Questionnaire subscales and self-esteem (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Psychosocial effect of dental aesthetics is higher in individuals with higher orthodontic treatment needs. There was no effect of need for treatment on self-esteem.
