Investigation of The Factors Associated With Postpartum Depression in Parents Who Applied to The Breastfeeding Support Center

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify factors related to increased postpartum depression (PPD) in parents.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted between March 2023 and March 2024 with the fathers of 0-3-month-old infants admitted to the Breastfeeding Support and Relactation Center of Hacettepe University Social Pediatrics who agreed to participate in the study. A 20-question questionnaire on socio- demographic characteristics and the validated Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to the fathers. Their spouses' data were obtained from the center‟s routine data.
Results: 25.5% of the fathers and 24.3% of the mothers had EPDS scores (≥8 and ≥13, respectively) above the cut-off value. A maternal history of depression increased the likelihood of PPD in the mother. An increase in the father's monthly income was found to decrease the likelihood of PPD, and a father's age between 30-39 years increased the possibility of PPD compared to a father's age <30 years. Prematurity of the baby was associated with PPD score in the mother, and a good relationship with the spouse was associated with PPD score in the father.
Conclusion: Postpartum mental health of fathers as well as mothers is an important public health problem. Therefore, there is a need for depression screening and support for fathers as well as mothers after childbirth. Research with larger samples is important in determining rapid and effective screening and support policies for PPD, as this may offer a great opportunity for public health interventions.
