AMERİKAN BAĞIMSIZ SİNEMASINDA YENİ BİR SOLUK: MUMBLECORE ALT TÜRÜNÜ FİLMLERLE ANLAMAK

Öz

Sinema birçok farklı kültürün sinema anlayışından ilham alan, bunu kendi bünyesinde eriten, dönüştüren, bu yönüyle de sürekli yenilenen, güncellenen ve kendini değiştiren bir sanat dalıdır. Bu bakımdan sinema alışılmış anlatıları bükebilen, yeni sinema anlatılarına kapı aralayabilen ve insanı ve ona dair olan hemen herşeyi kendi perspektifinden sunmayı başarabilen bir tarza sahiptir. Bu noktada bağımsız film anlayışı, sinemanın sanatsal gücünü öne çıkaran en önemli kollardan biri olarak ifade edilebilir. Kitle sinemasından, Hollywood’un ticari anlayışından ve standart anlatılardan ayrışan, alışılmış sinema kodlarından farklı bu sistem, kendi içerisinde de yeni alt türler üretmekte ve yeni anlatılara zemin hazırlamaktadır. Bu türler içerisinde en bilinenlerden biri Amerikan Bağımsız Sineması bünyesinde kendine yer edinmiş olan Mumblecore alt türüdür. Bu çalışmanın amacı bu yenilikçi alt türün genel özelliklerini ve sinematik prensiplerini filmler üzerinden ortaya koymak ve Mumblecore’un genel yapısını ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu doğrultuda amaçlı örneklem yoluyla belirlenmiş olan Funny Ha Ha (2002), Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007) ve Nights and Weekends (2008) isimli filmler Mumblecore’a ait özellikler çerçevesinde belirli kategoriler dâhilinde betimsel analiz yoluyla incelenmiştir. Sonuç olarak ismi geçen filmler özelinde Mumblecore yapımların kendilerine has özellikleri olduğu, bu özellikleri ile Hollywood’dan ayrıştığı ve avant-garde sinema zemininde kendine yer edindiği ancak yine de Amerikan kültürünün belirgin kodlarından beslendiği görülmüştür.

A New Breath in American Independent Cinema: Understanding The Mumblecore Subgenre Through Movies

Cinema is an art form that draws inspiration from the cinematic understanding of many different cultures, melts and transforms it within its own body, and in this respect, it is constantly renewed, updated and changing itself. In this respect, cinema has a style that can bend conventional narratives, open the door to new cinematic narratives and succeed in presenting human beings and almost everything about them from its own perspective. At this point, the independent film concept can be expressed as one of the most important branches that emphasize the artistic power of cinema. This system, which differs from mass cinema, Hollywood's commercial understanding and standard narratives, and is different from the usual cinematic codes, produces new sub-genres within itself and prepares the ground for new narratives. One of the most well-known of these sub-genres is the Mumblecore sub-genre, which has found its place within American Independent Cinema. The aim of this study is to reveal the general characteristics and cinematic principles of this innovative subgenre through films and to reveal the general structure of Mumblecore. In this direction, the films Funny Ha Ha (2002), Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007) and Nights and Weekends (2008), which were determined through purposive sampling, have been analyzed through descriptive analysis within certain categories within the framework of the characteristics of Mumblecore. As a result, it has been observed that Mumblecore productions have their own characteristics, differentiate themselves from Hollywood with these characteristics and take their place on the ground of avant-garde cinema, but still feed on the distinctive codes of American Culture.
