Determination of 12th Grade Students’ Conceptual Knowledge about Strong and Weak Interactions
Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the conceptual knowledge of 12th grade students about strong and weak interactions in chemical bonding and to investigate the relationships between these concepts. The study was carried out in the form of case study in descriptive research in a high school in Giresun with 66 students. Data collection instrument was a questionnaire including one concept map, one word association test, two drawing questions and two two-tier questions. According to the findings of the study, most of the students constructed the concept map in a hierarchical style, and they could not have shown the relations between the concepts in the map. In the word association test, students mostly could have written 3 or 4 words related to the
topic. In the question the intermolecular attractive forces of H2O have asked by drawing, most of students showed hydrogen bonding as interatomic bonding. At the end of the study, it is found that students confused strong and weak interactions and they could not establish the relations between these concepts.
