A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE STATE OF LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN EUROPE AND TURKEY

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the state of language education in Europe and Turkey. For this aim, reports reflecting the state of language education in Europe are examined and suggestions for the improvement of language education are made. In the study qualitative research methods are used. With content analysis method, reports published by the European Commission are analysed. For the analysis, reports on language education in Europe published in the years of 2008, 2012 and 2017 are used. The data is examined according to starting age, allocated time, language learners, languages taught, targeted level, languages according to school types and learning success. The results of the study revealed that language learning is starting in an earlier age compared to the past years and the number of learners have increased over the past years. However, the allocated time in the curriculum for the first and second languages are low. Moreover, results show that the targeted level in language learning is not reached. Out of the results it can be suggested, to increase the time for the teaching of languages at all school levels for the first and second languages, to begin with second language education also in an earlier age and to certificate language achievements.
