FROM CAVE PAINTINGS TO “VISION BOARDS”: MYTHICAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND RITUAL BEHAVIORS
Öz
The main aim of this study is to determine whether “vision boards” translated into Turkish as “hayal panosu” are related to archaic and traditional rituals. The study argues that vision boards originate from the same source as humanity’s ancient rituals; they represent a contemporary example of humanity’s attempt to find meaning and stability through magical methods based on mythical thought. The relationship between vision boards as a contemporary ritual and archaic rituals is primarily related to the irrational conditions in which modern man finds himself in the age of digital capitalism. As Turkish people increasingly gravitate towards individualistic lifestyles due to the disintegration of traditional societal values, their turning to new rituals nourished by their cultural codes is a natural process when they struggle to survive within this social reality. Understanding contemporary rituals at this point makes it possible to grasp the nature of crises experienced at both the individual and societal levels. This situation provides data for the social sciences to ensure healthy social transitions, while also revealing the necessity for folklore to trace the origins of contemporary rituals. In a world with a weak emphasis on sociality and devoid of the sacred, vision boards, nourished by mythical consciousness, continue to fulfill, at a minimal level, the functions of traditional rituals in meeting humanity’s existential needs. The ability of vision boards to continue fulfilling these functions depends on certain archaic qualities they possess: the symbolic language used in vision boards, the cyclical perception of time, and the belief that renewal, purification, and fertility can be born by referring to the time of the first creation in relation to this perception of time. These qualities of vision boards evaluated together in this study, within a line extending from cave paintings to seasonal fertility rituals, from theatrical performances to rituals such as Nevruz and Hıdrellez.
