Investigation of the Environmental Impacts of Slag Wastes Used in the Pavement Base Layers

In the last few decades, waste disposal has become a major concern in the majority of the industrial countries. Therefore, the consideration has been given to utilization of the wastes in various construction processes. Most wide-accepted usage of waste slag is in road construction which requires mass volume of construction material.
Many academic studies have been investigated the use of furnace slag in the different layer of highway pavements. In these studies, especially air cooled furnace slag has been found like the lime-stone aggregate in terms of physical and mechanical properties. But so far the slag contaminating effect to groundwater has not been sufficiently examined when they are used in the base and sub-base layer of the pavements.
In this study, leaching tests
have been conducted to the slag samples to determine the likely impact to the
groundwater. At the leach tests heavy metals and other hazardous materials are analyzed
by SPLP (Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure) method. Test
results are compared with standard levels. The Cr extraction of leaching tests
of FeCr slag mixed with cement at 2-10% or mixed at 50% with natural aggregate
decreased by up to 50%. Promising results were obtained especially in leaching
experiments with 10% cement content. In this way, it has been observed that the
waste slag mixed with cement keeps the pollutants like Cr.
