The Comparison of Science Teacher Candidates Attitudes towards the Teaching Profession

Öz

The aim of this research is to determine the factors that affect the attitudes of the
teacher candidates towards the teaching profession. The research was conducted on a total
of 206 students attending Science Teaching Programs in the Primary Education
Department (n=42), and Biology (n=52), Chemistry (n=38), Mathematics (n=49) and
Physics (25) Programs in the Secondary Education Department of Buca Education
Faculty, Dokuz Eylül University, İzmir, Turkey. The sample consists of 54.4 % females
and 45.6% males. In this research, Scale for the Attitudes Towards The Teaching
Profession, the reliability level of which is .82, and which was developed by Aşkar and
Erden (1987), and Personal Information Form, consisting of 16 questions, were
administered to the sample. The data were analyzed by One-Way Analysis of Variance, t
and Scheffe Tests, and SPSS 8.0 statistical package program was made use of. The results
of the research have discerned that the attitudes of students towards the teaching
profession were at the “medium” level and were affected by department, father’s attitude,
rank of the department preference, reason of the department preference, being pleased
with attending the department and with the given education.

FEN GRUBU ÖĞRETMEN ADAYLARININ MESLEĞE YÖNELİK TUTUMLARININ KARŞILAŞTIRILMASI

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı, öğretmen adaylarının öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik tutumlarını belirlemektir. Araştırma, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Buca Eğitim Fakültesi ilköğretim Bölümü Fen Bilgisi Öğretmenliği (n=42) ile Ortaöğretim Biyoloji (n=52), Kimya (n=38), Matematik (n= 49) ve Fizik Öğretmenliği (n=25) Anabilim Dallarından olmak üzere toplam 206 öğrenci üzerindegerçekleştirilmiştir. Örneklemde yer alan gençlerin % 54,4’ü kız, % 45,6’sı erkektir. Araştırmada; Aşkar ve Erden (1987) tarafından geliştirilen ve güvenirlik düzeyi .82 olan Öğretmenlik Mesleğine Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği ile 6 sorudan oluşan Kişisel Bilgi Formu uygulanmıştır. Araştırma verilerine tek yönlü Varyans Analizi, t ve Scheffe testleri yapılmış, SPSS 8.0 istatistik paket programı kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçları; öğretmen adaylarının mesleğe yönelik tutumlarının “orta” düzeyde olduğunu ve öğrencilerin mesleğe ilişkin tutumlarının öğrenim görülen bölüm, babanın tutumu, bölüm tercih sırası, bölüm tercih nedeni, bölümünde okumaktan  ve verilen eğitimden memnun olma durumu tarafından etkilendiğini ortaya koymuştur.
