By doing this study, it was intended to determine how students in the first
and second phases of primary education perceive some positive and negative
peculiarities of smoking individuals. 201 (53,9%) students from first and 172
(44,1%) students from second phase, out of 373 participating students, constitute
the sample of the study. In the study, a control list that includes 16 positive and
13 negative items, a total of 29 items, was used. χ2-square technique was used to
anlyse the data gathered. Findings from the study showed that the second phase
students’ perception level was higher in proportion to first phase students, in
regarding smoking individuals as brave, free, clean, enthusiasm and successful.
The second phase students also perceive nonsmokers as freer and more favorite
person. Considering the negative peculiarities of smokers, the perception level of
the second phase students was higher in proportion to the first phase students, in
regarding smokers as tense, fool, individuals not thinking of themselves,
individuals expecting admiration from others, individuals feeling admiration for
others. In conjunction with this, the perception level of the first phase students
was higher in proportion to the second phase students, in regarding smokers as
ugly and individuals not thinking of themselves. There were significant
differences between both groups, considering their perception levels of smokers
and nonsmokers. The lowest difference, however, was found on the item related
to health.
