A Study on the Concept of Coercion in Robert Nozick in the Context of Contemporary Philosophy

Although the history of the concept of coercion is not very old, it has an important place especially in contemporary philosophy. Therefore, studies on the concept of coercion are generally located within contemporary philosophy. The first study on the concept of coercion is Robert Nozick’s work titled "Coercion." In this work, Nozick focused on the analysis of the concept of coercion. At the same time, Nozick aimed to clarify some concepts that are related to the analysis of the concept of coercion. He explained the concept of coercion through the concepts of threat and suggestion. The concepts of threat and suggestion revitalized the idea of moral responsibility and the idea of could have done otherwise, which are widely expressed in contemporary moral philosophy. Thus, Nozick’s work has served as a guide and model for later studies on coercion. These studies, which started with Nozick, continue to be discussed today under various names. When we look at the studies on coercion, all of them are generally explained through certain propositions and examples. In this respect, the subject of this article is to shed light on and explain the studies on the concept of coercion in contemporary philosophy. The aim of this article is to analyze the propositions and examples created to explain the concept of coercion and to discuss whether they are sufficient or not. In doing so, objections and interpretations to the idea of coercion will also be included from time to time. Moreover, it is intended to contribute to the literature and shed light on the debates.

Çağdaş Felsefe Bağlamında Robert Nozick’te Zorlama Kavramı Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Öz

Zorlama kavramının tarihi çok eskiye dayanmamakla birlikte özellikle çağdaş felsefe içinde önemli bir yere sahiptir. Dolayısıyla zorlama kavramı ile ilgili yapılan çalışmalar da genel olarak çağdaş felsefe içinde yer almaktadır. Zorlama kavramı ile ilgili yapılan ilk çalışmaya Robert Nozick’in “Coercion” başlıklı çalışması örnek verilebilir. Bu çalışmasında Nozick, zorlama kavramının analizine odaklanmıştır. Aynı zamanda Nozick, zorlama kavramının analiziyle ilişkili olan bazı kavramlara da açıklık getirmeyi amaçlamıştır. O, zorlama kavramını, tehdit ve öneri kavramları üzerinden açıklamıştır. Tehdit ve öneri kavramları da özellikle günümüzde çağdaş ahlak felsefesinde çokça ifade edilen başka türlü yapamama fikri ile ahlaki sorumluluk fikrini canlandırmıştır. Böylece Nozick’in sözü edilen çalışması, zorlama ile ilgili daha sonra yapılan çalışmalar için de bir rehber ve model görevi görmüştür. Nozick’le başlayan bu çalışmalar ardından çeşitli isimlerle günümüzde de tartışılmaya devam etmektedir. Zorlama ile ilgili yapılan çalışmalara bakıldığında genel olarak hepsi de birtakım önermeler ve örnekler üzerinden açıklanmaktadır. Bu bakımdan bu makalenin konusu çağdaş felsefede zorlama kavramı ile ilgili yapılan çalışmalara ışık tutmak ve açıklamaktır. Bu makalenin amacı ise zorlama kavramını açıklamak için oluşturulan önermeleri ve örnekleri analiz etmek ve onların yeterli olup olmadığını tartışmaktır. Bunu yaparken zaman zaman zorlama fikrine yapılan itirazlara ve yorumlara da yer verilecektir. Dahası konunun literatüre katkı sağlaması ve yapılan tartışmalara ışık tutması amaçlanmaktadır.
