SAVUNMA HARCAMALARININ EKONOMİK BÜYÜMEYE ETKİSİ: SEÇİLMİŞ G20 ÜLKELERİ ÜZERİNE BİR PANEL VERİ ANALİZİ

Öz

Savuma harcamaları ile ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişki literatürde uzun zamandır tartışılan bir konudur. Savunma harcamalarının ekonomik büyüme üzerinde hem olumlu hem de olumsuz etkilerinin olduğunu savunan birçok görüşün mevcut olması literatürde bu ilişki üzerinde bir uzlaşı sağlanamadığını ortaya koymaktadır. Günümüzde birçok ülkenin bütçesinden savunma harcamalarına ayırdıkları miktar kamu bütçe giderlerinin büyük bir kısmını oluşturması bu konu üzerinde yapılacak çalışmaların ilerlemesi adına önem taşımaktadır. Savunma harcamalarının ekonomik büyümeye etkilerini derinlemesine araştırmak hem ekonomi politikalarını hem de ulusal güvenlik stratejilerini daha iyi şekillendirilmesine yardımcı olabilecek öneriler bulunmasına yardımcı olacaktır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Stockholm Uluslararası Barış Araştırmaları Enstitüsü (SIPRI)’nden alınan verilerle 2021 yılında en çok savunma harcaması yapan beş G20 ülkesi (ABD, İngiltere, Rusya, Çin ve Hindistan)’ nin 2000-2021 yılları arasındaki panel veri setini kullanarak savunma harcamalarının ekonomik büyümeye olan etkilerini panel regresyon yöntemi kullanarak test etmektir. Çalışmanın ampirik bulguları savunma harcamaları ile ekonomik büyüme arasında pozitif bir ilişki olduğunu göstermektedir.

IMPACT OF DEFENCE EXPENDITURES ON ECONOMIC GROWTH: A PANEL DATA ANALYSIS ON SELECTED G20 COUNTRIES

Öz

The relationship between defence spending and economic growth has been a topic of debate in the literature for a long time. The existence of various views arguing that defence spending has both positive and negative effects on economic growth indicates that there is no consensus on this relationship in the literature. The fact that many countries allocate a significant portion of their public budget expenditures to defence spending today highlights the importance of advancing studies on this topic. Conducting in-depth research on the effects of defence spending on economic growth can provide suggestions that help shape both economic policies and national security strategies more effectively. This study aims to test the effects of defence spending on economic growth using a panel regression method with the panel data set of the five G20 countries (USA, UK, Russia, China, and India) that made the highest defence expenditures in 2021, based on data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) for the period 2000-2021. The empirical findings of the study indicate that there is a positive relationship between defence spending and economic growth.
