A Field Research on Virtual Religious Communication: Sivas Cumhuriyet University Students
Abstract
The spread of internet use since the 2000s has brought about a differentiation in religious attitudes, communication, technology, economy and social structure. This has led to a change in the ways of communication, shopping, information, education, learning and research. Internet now offers virtual services to meet almost all the needs of people today which has led to the emergence of new motivations in internet usage. Especially in Turkey, the young population and high rates of internet use made it necessary to investigate virtual religious communication. This research was carried out in a quantitative pattern in order to determine the motivations of virtual religious communication of the students of the Faculty of Theology at Sivas Cumhuriyet University. The motivations of the 278 students were collected in 5 factors (knowledge acquisition, religious education, virtual worship, trust, convenience), they spared their daily average X == 102 minutes to internet use, but there was no significant relationship between time spent online and motivations for virtual religious communication.
