A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF THE RESEARCH STUDIES ON THE UTILISATION OF MUSEUMS AND HISTORICAL PLACES IN SOCIAL STUDIES AND HISTORY EDUCATION IN TURKEY
Abstract
The current study aims to analyze the content of those studies investigating the use of museums and historical places in social studies and history education in Turkey. In order to do that those available studies have been analyzed in detail to find out their aims and objectives, forms, publication years, designs, data collection tools, study samples or study groups and data analysis techniques. Designed as an interlocked multiple qualitative case study, this paper examines 65 available studies either in the forms of master dissertations and doctoral theses or published as papers in peer reviewed journals. The content of the available documents have been analyzed in accordance with the criteria appropriate to the above stated research aims. The findings reveal that the number of research studies examining the utilization of museums and historical places in social studies and history education has been increasing gradually year by year. Besides, the number of studies on museums are more than those on historical places. The other findings point out that studies carried out on these topics mostly designed as survey studies, commonly employing questionnaires or various types of scales. Therefore, the data analysis techniques employed in these studies are mostly descriptive statistics, while study samples commonly selected amongst middle school students. It was also found out that only three of those studies were carried out with primary and upper secondary school students
