PROSPECTIVE TEACHER’S VIEWS USING FACEBOOK AS LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Abstract

Nowadays, availability of social networks in education has been increased with new orientations in distance education. Social networks are preferred especially by trainers in order to maintain communication, interaction and co-operation between students. This survey study aimed to get prospective teachers’ views on the use of Facebook as a learning management system and to investigate their overall use of such a social network tool. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. Seventy three (73) first grade students taking the “Computer Assisted Training Course” at Baskent University, Faculty of Education from four different department were participated voluntarily in this study. Facebook was used as a secondary learning management system, beside Moodle. Course content, assignments, course information, discussions, and variety of applications were shared in each group at Facebook. “Facebook Usage” questionnaire consisting of 33 item with 5-point like type was used to collect data on students’ preferences and opinions on use of Facebook in general and about use of it as a learning management system in their courses. The results indicated that students preferred Facebook as a learning management system in their courses especially for its’ ease in discussions and support for interaction
