Symbolic Containment and Emotional Stasis in Ian McEwan’s The Cement Garden
Öz
This study examines the function of symbolism in Ian McEwan’s The Cement Garden (1978), arguing that symbolic elements in the novel operate not merely as metaphoric representations but as mechanisms through which emotional repression, denial, and moral disintegration are enacted. While previous criticism has frequently identified key symbols such as the ‘cement’, the ‘house’, and the ‘children’s secrecy’, this study shifts attention from symbolic meaning to symbolic process. It contends that McEwan’s symbolism in the novel is dynamic rather than static, emphasizing acts of containment, sealing, and immobilization as central to the novel’s psychological logic. The study employs a close textual analysis and detailed examination of key narrative episodes. Focusing on the materiality of domestic objects and substances, the study explores how cement functions as a symbolic agent that transforms grief into physical action, enabling the children to suspend emotional and social accountability. The act of encasing the mother’s body is read, in the present study, not only as an attempt to hide death but as a refusal to allow mourning, change, or moral judgment to occur. This impulse toward containment extends beyond cement to include architectural space – house and the garden – and silence and secrecy, forming a network of symbols that collectively enforce emotional stasis. Therefore, the study argues that symbolism in The Cement Garden functions as an active strategy of emotional containment, through which repression, denial, and moral suspension are materially enacted.
