An assesment of farmers’ opinions on biomass, agricultural waste, and environment in Hatay province
Abstract
Aims: The aim of this study is to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the enterprises engaged in agricultural activities in Hatay province. In addition, by examining the relationship between agriculture and energy, it is to investigate the thoughts of farmers on the evaluation of biomass and waste.
Methods and Results: The main material of the research is the data obtained from the provinces of Hatay, which is located in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, and which are determined as purposeful. In the research, primary data (survey and researcher observations) and secondary data related to the subject were used, collected from businesses that grow agricultural products that can be used in energy production. A face-to-face survey was conducted with 120 farmers in Hatay. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to analyze whether the numerical variables fit the normal distribution or not. Kruskal-Wallis test was used for nonparametric data. The variables found to be significant in the Kruskal-Wallis test were interpreted by using the Mann-Whitney U test. It has been observed that there are significant differences among the farmers regarding the findings obtained as a result of the research. In this context, the relationship between the waste situation of the enterprises and the thoughts of the farmers on biomass production with agriculture has been examined.
Conclusions: Different regional conditions affect the farmers’ choice of energy source use in agricultural production. In addition to the energy input, it has been determined that the labor force used in the execution of agricultural activities is also troublesome, so that, waste collection is difficult and costly. Also, inadequate cooperation and organization, high input costs, market and marketing problems, lack of a waste collection center and usage area, the thought that there is no economic return, are among the other obstacles to information and waste collection.
Significance and Impact of the Study: Most of the farmers support the use of renewable energy in agriculture. However, the number of farmers who think that agricultural products should be used for nutritional purposes is at a considerable level.
