Comparative Phytochemical Profiling of Three Turkish Viburnum Species Collected from Different Altitudes

Öz

Viburnum species are valuable to pharmaceutical and food industries owing to their rich polyphenols and traditional medicinal use. In this study, Viburnum opulus (870 m), V. orientale (1300 m), and V. lantana (1850 m), collected from different altitudes, were analyzed for volatile profiles by GC-MS, phenolic and flavonoid composition by HPLC, and antioxidant capacity. The species exhibited distinct chemical profiles: dominant volatiles were D-limonene in V. orientale leaves, methyl 3-methylbutanoate in V. opulus fruit, and benzaldehyde in V. lantana fruit. HPLC confirmed species-specific signatures, with V. opulus rich in (+)-catechin and chlorogenic acid, V. orientale in rutin, and V. lantana in L-ascorbic acid. V. opulus showed the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant capacity. Compound accumulation was associated with both species identity and collection altitude. These signatures indicate that the three taxa are differentially rich sources of bioactive compounds, with potential for targeted pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.
