Avrupa'da Kanuni İmgesi

Öz

Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, babası Yavuz Sultan Selim’den devraldığı Osmanlı Devleti’ni, özellikle batıya yaptığı seferlerle daha güçlü hale getirmiştir. Devlet onun devrinde zirve noktasına ulaşırken, kendisi de devlet içerisinde ortaya koyduğu nizamla “Kanuni” unvanını almıştır. Batılılar ise ona “Muhteşem” unvanını layık görmüşlerdir. Peki, gerçekten de Kanuni’nin batıda bu kadar güçlü bir imgesi var mıydı? Yoksa bu düşünce bir duygusallıktan mı ibarettir? Bu araştırmada, öncelikle çalışmanın asıl konusuna yardımcı olması bakımından Kanuni’nin batılı ülkelerle ilişkilerine özetle yer verilecektir. Ardından çalışmanın asıl konusu olan Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın batıdaki sahip olduğu imge çeşitli bilgi ve örneklerle izah edilmeye çalışılacaktır. Dönemin Fransa Kralı I. Fransuva’nın Kudüs’teki bir kilisenin camiye çevrilmesiyle ilgili sultana yazdığı mektup üzerinden örnekle, batıdaki Kanuni imgesi ifade edilmeye çalışılacaktır. Osmanlı Devleti’ne ait arşiv kaynakları başta olmak üzere, Kanuni’nin saltanatı döneminde Osmanlı topraklarına gelen batılı devlet adamlarının eserleri ve sonraki dönemlerde hem Osmanlı hem de sultan hakkında bilgi veren batılı müelliflerin eserleri çalışmanın önemli dayanak noktası olacaktır. Elde edilen bilgiler doğrultusunda başta sultanın dış görünüşü olmak üzere, kişiliği ve siyasal kimliği hakkında batı dünyasının belleğindeki Kanuni imgesi anlatılmaya çalışılacaktır.

The Image of Suleiman the Magnificent in Europe

Öz

Building upon the foundations laid by his father, Selim I, Suleiman consolidated and expanded the empire’s power, particularly through his western campaigns. Domestically, he became known as "Kanuni" (the Lawgiver) for instituting a comprehensive legal order; in Europe, however, he was celebrated as "the Magnificent," a title that reflected the West’s perception of his authority, wealth, and diplomacy. This study interrogates the extent to which Suleiman’s powerful image in Europe was rooted in political reality versus symbolic projection. After briefly outlining his diplomatic engagements with Western states, the paper focuses on a revealing piece of evidence: a letter from King Francis I of France to Sultan Suleiman, concerning the conversion of a church in Jerusalem into a mosque. The study will primarily rely on Ottoman archival sources, works written by Western statesmen who visited Ottoman territories during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, and later works by Western authors providing information about both Ottoman history and Suleiman the Magnificent. Based on the information obtained, the image of Suleiman in the Western world's memory will be described, focusing on the sultan's physical appearance, personality, and political identity.
