Presentation of Political Advertising through Digital Media in Türkiye: A Review on Türkiye Yüzyılı Advertisements
Abstract
Politics, communication and advertising are concepts that have been closely related to each other for a long time. While political communication activities were carried out in a one-way manner in the past, today they are realized in a two-way interaction with voters. Digital media has become an important tool used in political activities, especially by political parties and voters, and its importance in this area is increasing. In line with these developments, individuals have become more active in the field of politics in today's media environment. The main purpose of political communication is built on influencing and persuading voter groups. In this direction, the discipline called "political advertising" has emerged in order to plan and implement these communication processes. This study examines the digital media strategies and political advertising approaches of Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN and the AK Parti. The scope of the research consists of 29 “Century of Türkiye” political advertisement videos shared on the official Instagram account of Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN and the AK Parti up until the Presidential Elections on May 28, 2023. Through the use of content analysis, both formal and thematic elements have been examined. Within the framework of the study, emotional bonds were established through logos, slogans, music, and texts, while the leader figure reinforced the party identity. National and religious symbols were employed in a balanced manner to appeal to broad audiences, and local elements enhanced regional engagement. While positive and performance-oriented communication reflected strategic choices, the use of space highlighted tangible achievements. In the future, researchers can further examine the role of digital media in political communication through research methods such as surveys or interviews. As a result, this study has attempted to make significant contributions to the literature in the field of political communication and advertising and has illuminated the forms of communication established by political actors with voters through digital media. These findings can provide a valuable reference for more effective planning and execution of future election campaigns.
