Cluster Approach in Regional Development: An Aplication On Apiculture Sector in Bayburt

Abstract
The
aim of this study is to apply the theory called ‘‘Clustering Approach’’ in
economics literature for businesses in apiculture sector in Bayburt. In this
context, after a short description of clustering theoritically, it will be
assessed whether beekeeping operations show clustering features or not, by
using public survey method and applying for a field research. To get the data,
a questionnaire based on a structured interview method was used. Porter’s
Diamond Model, which was often mentioned in literature, was used as base in
order to reveal the clustering potential. As a result of the research according
to Diamond Model’s principles, Bayburt’s capacity to create employment, it’s
suitability to beekeeping in terms of climate, it’s capacity to attract other
cities’ apiculture firms, it’s low labor costs and it’s potential to create
demand for apiculture products are all good. Bayburt is at medium level in
terms of having a university, having firms which supports beekeepers marketing
opportunities, the number of firms in terms of competition, strategy and firm
structure, and in terms of grant incentives. And finally Bayburt is at low
level in terms of attract foreign investment, economic contribution of
infrastructure, demand for qualified product, existence of fixing and
modification. As a result of all these assessments, it can be stated that beekeeping
operations in Bayburt is included in clustering in gestation clustering
category.
