The Role That Black Sea Wharfs Played in the Food Supply for Istanbul in the 18th Century (The Wharfs on the Rumelian Shore)

Abstract

The Black Sea, which had been known as a “Turkish Lake” until the last quarter of the 18th century, holds many ports on a long corridor. Balchik, Kavarna, Burgas, Mangalia, Constanta, Caraharman and Varna, which are now located within the Bulgarian and Romanian borders, are a few of them. These wharfs that are situated on the western shore of the Black Sea were vital for the food supply of the public of Istanbul. The fact that they were close to Istanbul and that towns which produced important amounts of cereals were connected to them ensured their continuous popularity and they each became a market. This study provides information on the Rumelian wharfs based on the triad of State, merchants and public.
