A PORT CITY ON THE BLACK SEA IN THE ERA OF MODERNIZATION: BARTIN
Abstract
With the Ottoman Empire becoming a piece of European capitalism, the Ottoman cities became to modernize, starting from the second half of the 19th century, and urban transformation displayed itself mostly in port cities. However, the transformation experienced, has also caused the mechanism, which were transmitting surplus value to Europe through the ship, railroad and port city, to find a place in the Ottoman economic and social structure. One of those port cities, which gained a new appearance architecturally and a new function economically and politically, was Bartın. Bartın, which was not yet introduced to urban development during the early 1830’s, experienced a tangible urban development starting from the second half of the 19th century, leading to its population to grow, and the economic activities in the city to gain dynamism. The study shows, Bartın, just like other port cities, had gained a new face and function, while the transformation experienced was relatively slow

Öz
Osmanlı Devleti’nin Avrupa kapitalizminin bir parçası haline gelmesiyle birlikte 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren Osmanlı kentleri modernleşmeye başlamış ve kentsel dönüşüm, en çok da liman kentlerinde kendini göstermiştir. Fakat yaşanan dönüşüm, aynı zamanda buharlı gemi, demiryolu ve liman kenti vasıtasıyla Avrupa’ya artı değer aktaran mekanizmanın da Osmanlı ekonomik ve toplumsal yapısına yerleşmesine sebep olmuştur. Mimari açıdan yeni bir görünüm ve ekonomi-politik açıdan yeni bir işlev kazanan liman kentlerinden biri de Bartın’dır. 1830’ların başında henüz modern anlamda şehircilikle tanışmamış olan Bartın’da 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısıyla birlikte hissedilir derecede bir kentsel gelişim yaşanmış, nüfus artmış, ekonomik faaliyetler dinamizm kazanmıştır. Araştırmada Bartın’ın da tıpkı diğer liman kentleri gibi yeni bir çehreye ve işleve kavuştuğu ama yaşanan dönüşümün nispeten yavaş olduğu tespit edilmiştir
