THE COINS FROM PESSINUS IN GALATIA KINGDOM ( TOLISTOBOGS) REGION

Abstract

“The Coins from Pessinus in Galatia Kingdom ( Tolistobogs ) Region” is an important sample, since they reflect the historical, economic, religious and social structure of ancient Pessinus, a town which is widely known for the cult of Kybele. This study has been formed on the basis of portraits depicted on the observe of the coins of the Galatian Kingdom (in the middle of the 1st Century BC) starting from the double portraits of Kybele and Attis, as the earliest type, and respectively the portraits of Tyche, Attis, Apollon with laurel wreath and the portrait of Kybele with kalathos and OEA IAEA legend. In this period, the depiction of the lion on the reverse reflects the importance of the cult of Kybele for Pessinus, and it attests a continuity of representing the lion on coin reverses since the times of the Lydians, while the association of the goddess with this animal goes back to the Neolithic Age
