A CİTY AT A CROSSROADS OF HİSTORİCAL CARAVAN ROUTES: MİSİS

Abstract

Misis is a strategically and commercially important city, founded at a crossroads of historical caravan routes. A road from Syria crosses over Amanus Mountains; from Kanlı Passage it goes into Çukurova; from there in reaches to Misis and to Adana. Another road from Antakya, first passes through Belen Passage and, then via İskenderun and Payas it reaches Misis; from there it reaches Central Anatolia through Tarsus and Gülek Defile. Misis is the first destination of northern caravan route which departs from Yumurtalık Port. From there the road to the west reaches Adana. Northern route leads to Boğazköy, Kayseri and Cappadocia after passing Yılanlıkale (Levonkla), Tumlu, Anazarbus, Sis (Kozan), Feke, Saimbeyli (Hadjin) and Gebzeli Passage. Misis could become a storage and distribution centre of portable commodities of different cultures from distant locations because it is close and, so accessible to the important cities of past times; it is located one or two destinations away from Adana, Anazarbus, Sis (Kozan), Kastabala and Ayas (Yumurtalık)
