Transformation of Visual Representation of An Individual from Self Portrait to Selfie
Abstract
In this new century, in which the World and life rapidly evolves, we witness a differentiation in conceptions and perceptions as well as many changes in our lives. Among these changes, one – with the new technology wave – is the transformation of portrait that is a visual representation of an individual. In order to present a dimension of this transformation, this study aims to discuss the changing social life and way of living over photographs, and bring a new perspective to the existing discussions. For this purpose, in this article first the transition from portrait to self-portrait and later to selfie is analysed and observations are derived, then given these observations self-portrait and selfie is compared. Within this comparison, the pyschological reasons behind the production of self-portrait and selfie is also analyzed.
As a result of this analysis self-portrait and selfie is discovered to become a phenomena used to deliver one’s physcological state and/or message by using his/her own body. While it is known that self-portraits are produced by artists with intentions to make art, selfie is a type of self-portrait produced by common people with no artistic intentions. On the other hand, while artists who produce self-portrait deliver a message to the society, selfie producers have no intentions whatsoever. The most explicit threat of most selfie producers is their effort to create a surreal virtual identity. Finally, the most explicit commonality between self-portrait and selfie is that both is produced as a "narcissistic expressionism" by people who feel unique.
