Human Dignity as the Basis of Privacy Education: Responsibilities of the Family
Abstract
Islamic faith teaches that man is the noblest creature. The Creator placed man in the center of the universe and took measures to preserve this central position and nobility. It can be said that these measures, as formulated under the title makasid al-shari’a (purposes of the religious law), essentially aim at protecting man and his dignity. The Islamic concept of privacy is one of the important regulations aiming at protecting human dignity. Islam teaches that God, as the legislator, is also the source of privacy. Human relations are to be managed in line with the principle of privacy and with the rules established by God. The Islamic sensitivity of privacy has gained a significance encompassing the entire life within the divinely drawn boundaries and become a remarkable tone of Islamic civilization. For man is responsible for organizing and changing himself, society, and environment, in line with the divine model. As a result, it is possible to see the sensitivity of privacy, as a divine imperative, everywhere, in law, architecture, arts, in everyday life, at home and in the temple. Although the Islamic concept of privacy, as based on the notion of “noble humanity,” encompasses the whole of life, it is family where the feeling of privacy is cultivated and established. For family is the child’s first and primary place of socialization. Thus family can be considered to be the basis of not only society but also the privacy education. Human dignity can be protected by having high moral values and living accordingly. A true conception of privacy is one of the most essential factors of protecting human dignity. Families are expected to instill a sound understanding of morality and privacy into the most valuable “trusts” they are responsible for. In doing so, it should not be ignored that the feeling of privacy is intrinsic to humanity and that respect to privacy is essential to the protection of human dignity. If the essence of religious education in Islam is the formation of the consciousness of service to God, then the cultivation of the feeling of privacy may be one of the strongest factors in the said formation. Therefore, a concept of privacy based on human dignity can be considered to be one of the important areas of study in religious education.
