Current Approaches to Textile Sculpture on Recycled Cotton Fabric
Abstract
Today, the concept of “plastic arts” has been replaced by “visual arts”, which is a much more comprehensive concept. Textile art, and Fiber art afterwards, managed to be involved in the field of visual arts after the 60s within the framework of plastic opportunities they involved. In this process, which commenced with the usage of textile materials in voluminous works, basic artistic elements of the art of sculpture were utilized in textile art along with the basic aesthetic elements of painting art. It is possible to say that, within the transition from superficial textiles to dimensional textiles, artists started to develop innovative approaches in their forms of work with the influence of their pursuit of new materials, techniques and forms, and while doing so, they made use of the physical aspect of sculpture. This new understanding of form, which was named as “Soft Sculpture” by Claes Oldenburg in 1960 and which developed the material repertoire of sculpture serves as an example of this situation as well. During and after the 60s, artists questioned the physical properties of the materials in their production and used them in interdisciplinary interactions. The changes that took place in art branches have brought about the hybridization of art forms and led to new artistic interpretations that are produced by various objects. Today, textile has been creating new creative fields beyond traditional fields of use and expertise, and creative and innovative interventions performed with traditional materials and techniques have given textiles contemporary artistic identities.
The purpose of this study is to shed light on the relations between the disciplines of sculpture and textile with the help of synthesizing current information obtained by literature review. Examining the expression methods of textile materials and techniques in the 21st century, this study involves research on specifically cotton fabric in textile sculptures created with fabric. As the first stage of data collection, artists who used cotton and natural colour fabric in works of textile sculpture were identified. Limited to the textile sculptures of the six identified artists, the study examined the transformation process of the fabric from two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional plastic structure in the works of the artists. It was found out that the works with cotton fabrics that were analysed were formed by old and surplus materials, which serves as an example for the concept of sustainability. By utilizing the method of work analysis, a qualitative research method, the interrelated formal structures of the works which form an artistic discourse, common materials, technical features and semantic relations were examined via literature review method.
