Preservice Teachers’ Views on Year-End Shows in Preschools

Öz

This study investigated preservice teachers’ views on year-end shows in preschools. The study adopted a basic qualitative research design. The sample consisted of 20 preservice teachers recruited using purposive criterion sampling. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview questionnaire developed by the researchers. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The results were grouped under five themes: (1) reasons for year-end shows, (2) necessity of year-end shows, (3) effect of year-end shows on child development, (4) content of year- end shows, and (5) replacement of year-end shows. Participants stated that year-end shows were held for cultural reasons and for families, children, teachers, and schools. However, they noted that year-end shows were some sort of a habit performed to please parents. Most participants believed that year-end shows were unnecessary and had both positive and negative effects on children. Participants added that year-end shows should be gamified and have content that would allow children to enjoy themselves without feeling stress. To them, parents should be informed about year-end shows and make sure that they are involved in them. They stated that festivals, picnics, fairs, competitions, group activities, and trips could replace year-end shows. They added that children and their parents could take photos in those activities and display them, such as portfolio presentations.
