The First Monk Pope Gregory the Great and His Thoughts on the Episcopacy

Pope Gregorius I (d. 604) or more commonly known as Gregory the Great; he is one of the most important figures in the history of the Papacy. He was given the title of "Magnus" (great, supreme) due to the arrangements that he made in the church structure during the Papacy, the political relations that he established with the kingdoms in Europe and the Eastern Roman Empire, and the activities that he carried out in order to maintain the existence of the Roman Church and strengthen its authority. Gregorius, who is an extremely prolific writer compared to other popes, not only made structural arrangements, but was also very busy with the moral level of the Christian society and wrote works for this purpose.The works of Gregorius had a very important place in the formation of Europe's understanding of religion during the Middle Ages. His work ‘Liber Regulae Pastoralis’, which is the subject of our article, was also accepted by the Church and played a major role in shaping the clergy class. In this work, Gregorius talks about who can be a bishop, what kind of features the bishop should have, what kind of life he should lead and how he should preach, and finally, he ends his work by explaining how the spiritual world of the bishop should be. When the characteristics and behaviors described in the book are examined, it is seen that only a bishop or clergyman who fulfills certain religious duties is not described. The ideal bishop described by Gregorius should have the characteristics of a monk. In our article, Gregorius' definition of ideal bishop and the background of this definition are examined.

İlk Keşiş Papa Gregorius Magnus ve Piskoposluk Makamı Hakkındaki Görüşleri

Papa I. Gregorius (ö. 604) ya da daha çok kullanılan ismi ile Gregorius Magnus; Papalık tarihinin en önemli isimlerinden biridir. Papalık süresi boyunca kilise yapılanması içerisinde gerçekleştirmiş olduğu düzenlemeler, Avrupa’daki krallıklar ve Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu ile kurduğu siyasi ilişkiler, Roma Kilisesi’nin varlığını devam ettirmek ve otoritesini güçlendirmek adına yaptığı faaliyetler nedeniyle kendisine “Magnus” (büyük, yüce) sıfatı verilmiştir. Diğer papalarla kıyaslandığında oldukça üretken bir yazar olan Gregorius yalnızca yapısal düzenlemeler gerçekleştirmemiş aynı zamanda Hıristiyan toplumunun ahlak düzeyi ile de oldukça meşgul olmuş ve bu amaç doğrultusunda eserler kaleme almıştır. Gregorius’un eserleri Orta Çağ boyunca Avrupa’nın din anlayışının oluşmasında oldukça önemli bir yere sahip olmuştur. Makalemizin konusu oluşturan Liber Regulae Pastoralis adlı eseri de Kilise içinde kabul görmüş ve din adamları sınıfının şekillenmesinde büyük rol oynamıştır. Gregorius bu eserinde kimlerin piskopos olabileceğinden, piskoposun sahip olması gereken özelliklerden, nasıl bir hayat sürmesi ve nasıl vaaz vermesi gerektiğinden bahsetmekte ve son olarak piskoposun manevî dünyasının nasıl olması gerektiği anlatarak eserini sonlandırmaktadır. Kitapta anlatılan özellikler ve davranışlar incelendiğinde yalnızca belirli dini görevleri yerine getiren bir piskopos ya da din adamının anlatılmadığı görülmektedir. Gregorius’un anlattığı ideal piskopos, bir keşişin özelliklerine sahip olmalıdır. Makalemizde Gregorius’un ideal piskopos tanımı ve bu tanımın arka planı incelenmektedir.
