Öz

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between social media addiction and cognitive-behavioral physical activity levels among university students. A relational survey model was employed, and the study population consisted of university students. The sample included 315 students selected through a random sampling method. The data collection tools used in the research were the social media addiction scale and the cognitive-behavioral physical activity scale. According to the findings, social media addiction and physical activity levels showed significant differences based on demographic variables such as gender, age, and income level. Female participants exhibited higher levels of social media addiction compared to male participants. In contrast, male students demonstrated more positive attitudes toward physical activity and higher self-regulation skills. In terms of income level, students with lower income had higher social media addiction scores and lower physical activity scores. An analysis by age groups revealed that social media addiction decreased with age, whereas physical activity levels increased. Additionally, body mass index (BMI) was found to be positively correlated with social media addiction and negatively correlated with physical activity. In conclusion, social media addiction was identified as a significant factor negatively affecting physical activity levels among university students. Accordingly, it is recommended to provide informational seminars, digital detox workshops, and counseling services for female students to reduce social media use. Furthermore, universities can organize group exercise sessions, such as walking clubs, specifically for female students to promote physical activity. For students with low income, offering free gym memberships or organizing free outdoor physical activity events (morning exercise programs, public running events) in cooperation with local municipalities is also suggested.
