Crisis, Change, and Transformation: The Paradigm Shift Created by COVID-19 in the HRM Literature

Yıl 2026, Cilt: 13 Sayı: 1, 125 - 152, 13.01.2026

Öz

COVID-19 has disrupted existing systems and forced organizations into mandatory change and transformation, affecting all areas on individual, social, and organizational levels. Humans, as the most valuable asset of organizations, have both influenced and been influenced by this process. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the discipline of Human Resource Management through a systematic literature review. Using the SPAR-4-SLR protocol, 245 articles from the Web of Science database were analyzed through descriptive and content analysis. The findings revealed not only a quantitative increase in HRM literature but also a significant paradigm shift in content. Remote work, employee well-being, psychosocial effects, gender inequality, and digitalization emerged as dominant themes. However, there were major representation gaps in areas such as blue-collar workers, migrants, certain sectors, and Global South countries. Despite theoretical diversity, many studies lacked theoretical depth and empirical comprehensiveness.
