Metaphors Developed by Teachers towards “the Concept of Parents”
Abstract
This study aims to put forth the perceptions of teachers towards the parents of students by using metaphor analysis. Phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in order to identify teachers’ metaphoric perceptions towards the concept of “parents of students”. Study group of this research consists of 148 teachers working in central districts of Kayseri city in the academic year 2011-2012. The study group was requested to complete the sentences starting with “Parents look like…because…” Content analysis method was used in order to analyze the data. Teachers who participated in the research developed 102 metaphors towards the concept of parents and 7 categories of parents were derived. These categories can be stated as parents who are directive and open to improvement, parents as a complementary element, self-interested parents, critical parents, protective parents, parents who know-it-all and indifferent parents. At the end of the research, it was found that most of the metaphors were gathered under parents who are directive and open to improvement (19,59 %). This is followed by parents as a complementary element (17,56 %), self-interested parents (15,54 %), critical parents (14,18 %), protective parents (14,18 %), parents who know-it-all (10,81 %) and finally indifferent parents (8,10 %).
