Relationships Between Vertical And Horizontal Individualism/Collectivism And Social Capital

Abstract

Social capital is a result of human relations that depends on trust and it is a non-material capital. Three important components of social capital that created by social networks are trust, common values and the emotional of belongings. To know people and to be in touch with them are not enough for the emergence of a social capital. Belonging, knowing and trust to other people and to believe that you are sharing common values with these people are necessary for the social capital. Many of researches on individualism and collectivism have been conducted in social and cross-cultural psychology and conceptualization has been put forward. Triandis makes the distinction between horizontal and vertical individualism/collectivism. The self in vertical collectivism is perceived as part of a society based on inequality. In the horizontal collectivism, the self is part of a community where group members are perceived as equal. Vertical individualism, acceptance of autonomous individual and inequality; horizontal individualism consists of an autonomous individual and an emphasis on equality. Some psychologists suggest that social capital related to individualism and collectivism.  In light of the literature the aim of this study is to examine whether vertical and horizontal individualism/collectivism predict social capital. Regression analysis was used to determine whether vertical and horizontal individualism/collectivism predict social capital. Overall, the results of this study indicated that Vertical individualism/Collectivism and Horizontal individualism/Collectivism predicted social capital
