Discourse in AI-Generated and Journalist-Produced News: A Comparative Analysis Based on the PKK’s Symbolic Disarmament Ceremony

Abstract

This study comparatively examines the discourse structures of news texts generated by artificial intelligence and those created by professional journalists in traditional media. As a case study, the symbolic disarmament ceremony of the terrorist organisation PKK in the Sulaymaniyah region of Iraq on 11 July 2025 was selected. The event was chosen because it generated widespread repercussions in the Turkish media and provoked various reactions among political actors. The study was conducted using the newspapers Hürriyet, Sözcü, and Yeni Şafak, representing different editorial policies in Turkey, along with the AI-based news platform Dipnot.tv. The analysis was structured around the themes of ‘the presentation of terrorist actors in the media,’ ‘the official discourse of the state,’ and ‘opposition reactions,’ based on van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis model. The findings show that events are not merely reported in either traditional or AI-based news, but framed through discursive preferences. While traditional media reflects discourse aligned with ideological orientations noted in the literature, AI news employs a more neutral style with short sentences, passive structures, and limited commentary. Content ranking and thematic emphasis also serve a guiding function in AI texts. Therefore, it is concluded that AI journalism, like traditional media, does not merely convey information but also functions as a mechanism that constructs discourse.
