An 18th Century Philanthropist Accused of Infidelity: Raqqa Notable Firuz Pasha

Abstract

Firuz Pasha is a person who served as a notable and lieutenant-governor of a Raqqa, and as a governor once in Diyarbakir and twice in Raqqa. According to some archive documents, Pasha was described as a person who caused mischief and put pressure on the people. Pasha established a foundation when he became the governor of Raqqa. According to the charter of the established foundation, Firuz Pasha Foundation has contributed to Ruha in the field of environment and urban planning. The foundation's efforts to repair sewers, pools and waterways of some mosques, as well as the lighting of mosques and minarets, can be considered as efforts to give a different identity to the appearance of the city. Pasha attached importance to adult education. In this context, he appointed competent people to his foundation and contributed to the religious education of the people. Firuz Pasha took the religious education of children seriously, built private teaching institutions, and developed the children's education curriculum himself. Pasha appointed people who were qualified, competent in their job, and had strong character to these private teaching institutions that he built for the education of children. To the best of our knowledge, there is not an independent study carried out on Firuz Pasha until today. This study will examine and evaluate Firuz Pasha's administration in Ruha, his being a trustee, his governorship, his life after his governorship, and the foundation he established. The documents in the inventory of the State Archives Directorate Ottoman Archives Department and the General Directorate of Foundations Foundation Archives were used as primary sources in the research.
