The Waqfs and Life of Ayse Sultan, Daughter of Sultan Ahmed III

Abstract

The lives of the sultan's daughters and the charitable institutions they founded have an important place for us to learn the details of the dynasty's marriage policies, bureaucratic relations, and the life stories of the individuals of the period. The sultan's daughters spent their entire lives in Istanbul and around the palace, and their fathers were very influential in their education and marriage life from birth. In this context, the tradition of marrying the sultan's daughters to prominent and trustworthy statesmen after they received their education continued until the last period. The life of Sultan Ahmed III's daughter Ayse Sultan also provides important information about eighteenth-century court life and the Ottoman dynasty. She had three marriages and one daughter in her 58 years of life. At the age of 11, she married Silahtar İstanbuli Mehmed Pasha for the first time, and three years after his death, she married Ratip Ahmed Pasha. Her last marriage was with Silahtar Mehmed Pasha, the Governor of Tarhala. She donated the land and farms owned by the waqf established. Ayse Sultan also had a fountain built in her name, so her name has been included among the lady sultans who built fountains. In this study, Ayse Sultan's life from birth until death, her marriages, the properties she owned, the assets of the waqf she established, and the charitable aspects of her waqf are discussed. It also touches on the lives of her husbands and children. The contradictions regarding the death dates of some of his wives have also been resolved in this study. In this study, in addition to the chronicles of the period, the documents in the General Directorate of Foundations and the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency were consulted.
