EVELYN WAUGH’UN BRIDESHEAD REVISITED ADLI ROMANINDA KÜLTÜREL YENİDEN İNŞA ARACI OLARAK ANLATI BELLEĞİ

Öz

Bu çalışma, Evelyn Waugh’un Brideshead Revisited (1945) adlı romanını kültürel anlatıbilim çerçevesinde ele alarak bu romanda anlatı belleğini, modern kültürel çözülme karşısında geleneği yeniden inşa eden bir araç olarak kullandığını tartışır. Anlatıcı Charles Ryder’ın geriye dönük anlatısına dayanan bellek, yalnızca anlatısal bir teknik değil, aynı zamanda yirminci yüzyıl İngiltere’sinde aristokratik ve ruhani değerlerin çöküşüne karşı geliştirilen kültürel bir tepkidir. Ryder’ın hüzünlü hatıraları ile Sebastian Flyte’ın nostaljik kaçışı arasındaki karşıtlık, belleğin hem anlamı koruyan hem de hayal kırıklığını derinleştiren çift yönlü işlevini ortaya koyar. Brideshead Malikanesi ve Marchmain ailesi, kaybolan bir dünyanın belleksel simgeleri olarak anlatıya yerleşir. Ansgar Nünning ve Astrid Erll gibi kuramcılardan yararlanan bu çalışma, Brideshead Revisited adlı romanı kişisel anıların kültürel bir yeniden inşaya anlatı yoluyla dönüştürülmesi bağlamında ele almaktadır. Çalışma, Waugh’un anlatısal hafızayı tarihsel çözülme dönemlerinde kimlik ve geleneği etkin biçimde şekillendiren bir güç olarak konumlandırdığını ileri sürmektedir.

NARRATIVE MEMORY AS CULTURAL RECONSTRUCTION IN EVELYN WAUGH’S BRIDESHEAD REVISITED

Öz

This paper explores Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited (1945) through the framework of cultural narratology, arguing that the novel employs narrative memory as a tool to reconstruct tradition amid modern disruption. Memory, anchored in the narrator Charles Ryder’s retrospective narration, operates as both a narrative technique and a cultural response to the decline of aristocratic and spiritual values in twentieth-century England. Contrasting Ryder’s elegiac remembrance with Sebastian Flyte’s retreat into nostalgia, the novel reveals memory’s capacity to both preserve meaning and deepen loss. Brideshead Castle and the Marchmain family become mnemonic symbols of a vanishing world. Drawing on theorists such as Ansgar Nünning and Astrid Erll, this study examines Brideshead Revisited as a narrative transformation of personal recollection into cultural reconstruction. It argues that Waugh positions narrative memory as a force that actively shapes both identity and tradition during periods of historical disintegration.
